Week of December 18 – 23: Free/Fly/Back underwater push-offs
Developing a powerful underwater streamline dolphin kick is a critical component to competitive swimming. When done correctly it is what many swim coaches call the “fifth stroke”. Having a solid underwater dolphin kick is a prerequisite for swimmers of every stroke. Using your core/hips is essential to a powerful dolphin kick. In our lesson plan at JMSS we teach this technique by “bowing”. A simple way to visualize the role that your core plays is to think of your body as a whip. Your core is the handle, where all the power comes from, with the tail of the whip being your quick-snapping feet and toes. We tell our swimmers to kick small and kick fast.
